Martinez, Moore, 3 other Sho’men mine for gold at invitational

CHESTERTOWN — If this had been a high school meet, Henry Martinez would have lowered his own school records in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle.

A rising senior at Kent County High School, Martinez medaled in four events for 16- to 18-year-old boys, including gold in the 100 fly, 100 free and 200 individual medley, at the annual Sho’men Invitational.

Kodie Moore, 7, also won three races for the host team, while all told five Sho’men Aquatics swimmers took home gold medals.

For three decades, the Sho’men Invitational, a longer-distance summer meet, has been a premier showcase for age-group swimmers on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Delaware.

The July 13 meet at Washington College’s Casey Swim Center attracted nearly 180 girls and boys representing 11 programs on the Delmarva Peninsula.

The top three place-finishers in each event were awarded medals, and the next five received ribbons.

Luisa’s Cucina Italiana and Kent School were the lead sponsors.

Cecil YMCA swimmer Emersyn Rogers, 9, had her name inscribed on the perpetual Ann Dyke Trophy after establishing four meet records. She set the standard in the 100 IM, 50 free, 50 fly and 50 backstroke for 7- to 9-year-old girls.

The trophy is named for Dyke, who started the invitational many years ago, and is awarded to the swimmer who establishes the most records.

Mako Swim Club’s Ethan Schirmer (100 backstroke, 12-13 boys) and Lewes Yacht Club’s Gracie Maughan (100 breaststroke, 16-18 girls) also established meet records. Maughan, a two-time state high school champ in the 100 breast for Sussex (Delaware) Academy, lowered her own record that she set last year.

Martinez’s winning time of 54.68 in the 100 fly smashed his school record of 58.90 set in 2023, and his time of 49.05 in the 100 free is faster than the school record of 49.71 he set this year.

He is the three-time team MVP at KCHS.

In addition to Martinez, 17, and Moore, 7, Sho’men Aquatics had gold medalists in Kinsley Cunningham, 10; William Meyer, 15; and Jacob Gardner, 18.
