Mary Ellen Mabe is gallery’s featured artist for June

CHESTERTOWN — The Artists’ Gallery will feature new paintings by Mary Ellen Mabe in an exhibit titled “Art Colors Life” during the month of June.

An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 7, which is First Friday in downtown Chestertown.

The gallery is located at 239 High St.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sundays.

Mabe, who grew up in the Finger Lakes region of New York, learned how to draw at an early age.

She began painting in oil with classes taught by local regional artists and continued her art studies after relocating to Chicago, where she began classes at The Studio in the Woods, owned by Bonnie Anderson.

She continued to paint after relocating to Connecticut, then Texas and the United Kingdom.

In 2004, Mabe and her husband moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where she began taking mentoring sessions with Nancy Tankersley in Easton.

Over the years, Mabe has had workshops with many well-respected and accomplished artists, and has continued to be inspired in an area so rich in the arts.

“My subject matter remains varied, but I love painting flowers and figures in various settings. Color is integral to my passion for art,” Mabe has said.

Since her arrival on the Eastern Shore, Mabe has juried into Oxford Fine Arts and Local Color, where she received two Judges’ Awards of Excellence and two honorable mentions.

She has been a member of the St. Michaels Art League since 2006.

Mabe became a partner with The Artists’ Gallery in Chestertown in 2018 and was previously juried into the Working Artists’ Forum in Easton in 2015.
