CHESTERTOWN –– In remembrance of United States military personnel who lost their lives in the fight for freedom, Sumner Hall will host the annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony here on Monday, May 25.
Before the parade down High Street kicks off, from 9 to 10 a.m., there will be music and poetry readings in the area of Memorial Park. Also, you can sign a postcard that will be sent to an active duty service member, or purchase a tissue paper poppy in memory of a veteran.
Lineup for the parade will start at 9 a.m. at Dixon Drive; pre-registration is not required. Floats are encouraged.
Following the parade, which starts at 10 a.m., Wayne Gilchrest will speak to the gathering from a stage in the 200-block of High Street. He is a combat veteran of Vietnam, a Purple Heart recipient and represented Maryland’s 1st Congressional District for nine terms.
Gilchrest currently is a council member in Betterton.
To close out the program, there will be remembrance and recognition of local service men and women.
Kent County’s 250th Anniversary Committee assisted in the planning of the Memorial Day observance in Chestertown, according to Sumner Hall board President Vanessa Ringgold.
