Leadership changes at KCMS; 20-plus new staff join Kent schools

ROCK HALL — There are more than 20 new teachers and staff members in the Kent County public school system for 2023-24, in subjects ranging from math and science to music and band.

Also, there has been a change of leadership at Kent County Middle School in Chestertown, where longtime educator Mark Buckel is the new principal and Kelley Melvin is the new assistant principal.

Buckel has been with Kent County Public Schools for 17 years.

He spent the last two years as the school system’s assistant coordinator for special education and career and technical education (CTE).

Buckel began his career in the classroom as a science teacher and spent four years as an assistant principal at Kent County High School.

Most recently Melvin was an instructional specialist and worked directly with Buckel on a number of initiatives.

Like Buckel, she also began her KCPS career in the classroom, teaching sixth grade math at the middle school. She has nine years total experience with Kent County Public Schools, having also taught elementary school.

Buckel and Melvin moved into their new positions this summer.

New teachers started the school year a week before the rest of the 10-month staff, getting trained on their classes’ curriculum, Kent County Public Schools’ policies and procedures, and school safety.

This year’s new staff members are listed below.

H.H. Garnet Elementary School:  Shelley Armiger, Shannon Simon and Lily Willis.
