CHESTERTOWN — What is being promoted as a peaceful assembly aiming to address growing concerns about the protection of civil liberties and to advocate for steadfast adherence to constitutional principles at both the local and national levels will be held Saturday afternoon, March 28 in Chestertown’s downtown Fountain Park.
The Kent County Democratic Central Committee is sponsoring the rally titled “No Kings/Liberty and Justice for All.”
The emphasis will be on unity and empowerment, not partisanship, according to a KCDCC spokesperson.
Everyone is invited.
“As the political and social landscape evolves, many members of the Eastern Shore community feel that fundamental rights are being sidelined. This event serves as a platform for like-minded individuals to unite, share their perspectives, and elevate the issues most pressing to the rural and coastal communities of the region,” a news release states.
Kent County faces challenges shared by rural areas across the country. For example, the high costs for housing, energy and health care; changes in Medicaid and SNAP [Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program]; and the rising costs for farmers due to tariffs and labor shortages.
“We are coming together not to divide, but to remind our leaders and our neighbors that the Constitution is the bedrock of our society,” said Regina Oliver of Chestertown, one of the event organizers.
“This is about ensuring that ‘liberty and justice for all’ remains a lived reality for every member of our community, especially as we face challenges that threaten our individual freedoms,” Oliver said.
The rally will last for about an hour, beginning promptly at 1 p.m.
There will be:
• Guest speakers, local advocates and community leaders.
• Musical performances by local residents joining in song to uplift and unite those who attend.
• Voter registration and nonpartisan organizations can avail themselves of tables and tents set up around the park to encourage attendees to become more community and civic minded.
Candidates for office will be offered a space in one area to meet and greet.
Candidates from all parties are welcome to participate.
They should contact the organizer.
• After the staged event, at about 2 p.m., there will be a quiet walk in single file to Washington Avenue for sign waving, west side, symbolizing unity and resolve.
The organizers emphasize that this is a peaceful, nonpartisan assembly.
All attendees are encouraged to bring signs that reflect the themes of liberty, justice and community empowerment, and to wear yellow.
“Our goal is to foster a dialogue that moves us forward,” Oliver said.
“The Eastern Shore has a long history of independence and resilience. We are simply here to ensure those values are respected and preserved for the next generation,” she said
