CHESTERTOWN — Tyler Rice literally jumps for joy as Tara Radebaugh runs toward Sophia Warner, center, to celebrate Warner’s game-winning goal on the Kibler pitch here Saturday for Washington College.
A freshman from Malvern, Pennsylvania, Warner scored twice in the 3-2 come-from-behind sudden victory against Batten University.
[The school formerly known as Virginia Wesleyan University officially changed its name to Batten in July 2026 to honor benefactor Jane Batten and the Batten family.]
Warner’s game-winning goal came in the 73rd minute on a two-on-one breakaway. Rice was credited with the assist.
Washington senior keeper Charlotte Schurman [five saves] had denied Batten’s Landry Meyer on a shot from close range in the 72nd minute to keep it tied at 2.
Warner gave the locals a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute, scoring her first collegiate goal off a pass from Radebaugh.
Meyer assisted Kellyn McCloud in the 21st minute to deadlock at 1-all, and six minutes later scored the go-ahead goal as Batten [0-2] took its only lead of the afternoon.
The Marlins’ 2-1 advantage held up until the 52nd minute when Shore senior captain Natalie Watkinson converted on a penalty corner insert from Jamie Baldwin, making it 2-2 and ultimately sending the game into extra time.
With the win, Washington evened its record at 1-1 after taking it on the chin Tuesday, Sept. 1 in the season opener at No. 17-ranked Stevenson, 5-0.
