Proceeds of Rotary’s Soup & Sip event support school system’s visual arts program

ROCK HALL — The Rotary Club of Chestertown is continuing to show its support for Kent County Public Schools.

Beverly Birkmire, the club’s foundation chair, attended the Board of Education’s monthly meeting Jan. 12 with a check for $3,500.

The money was raised during the club’s annual Soup & Sip event, held in late October at Chester River Yacht & Country Club.

The club is a frequent booster for Kent County Public Schools, with past donations to the Makerspace afterschool program and Galena Elementary School’s annual One School, One Book reading event.

Birkmire said this year’s Soup & Sip organizers chose to focus on the school system’s visual arts program.

For the Soup & Sip event, a friendly cooking competition among local chefs, Chester River Yacht & Country Club was decorated with student artwork.

Birkmire said attendees were impressed with the art.

“Actually, there were several people who asked if they [the artwork] were for sale,” Birkmire told the school board members.

Birkmire presented the donation check to Superintendent Mary McComas on behalf of David White, president of the Rotary Club of Chestertown, and Jamie Williams, chair of the Soup & Sip event committee. Williams also is director of the county’s Department of Economic and Tourism Development.
