CHESTERTOWN — The Garfield Center for the Arts at the Prince Theatre has announced the 2025 Playmakers director and the start date for open registration.
Playmakers is the GCA’s theatrecraft and acting camp for aspiring performers ages 8 through 15.
For scheduling reasons, this year’s camp starts a little later than last year, with the first date of July 14 and the camp-ending performance weekend of August 8-9-10.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. on Monday, March 17. See https://www.garfieldcenter.org/camps/.
Playmakers tends to get filled quickly, so prospective campers and their parents should register early to ensure a spot.
The 2025 Playmakers production title has not yet been selected. When that happens, an announcement will be posted on the Garfield Center’s Facebook page.
Returning this summer as Playmakers director is Kent County Middle School seventh grade English/Language Arts teacher Kaitlyn Wright, who was a 2024 Maryland Teacher of the Year finalist.
She brings more than a decade of experience in education.
Wright earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Arcadia University (Pennsylvania) and a master’s degree in educational leadership and administration from Salisbury University.
Over the years in the classroom, she has infused her ELA curriculum with the study of drama, inviting her middle and high school students to perform and explore works spanning various genres including titles such as the science fiction teleplay “The Monsters are Due on Maple Street,” Shakespeare’s tragedy “Romeo and Juliet” and H.G. Wells’ radio classic “The War of the Worlds.”
Wright directed her first middle school production, “The Big Bad Musical,” at Salisbury Middle School in 2017 and directed Kent County Middle School’s productions of “A Christmas Carol,” “The Wizard of Oz” and “Alice in Wonderland.”
She said she is looking forward to returning to Playmakers this summer.
The fee per camper is $400 for ages 8 to 11, $450 for ages 12 to 15.
The Garfield Center for the Arts is located at 210 High St. in downtown Chestertown.
Monday through Friday camp days start at 9 a.m. with drop-off beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Each camp day ends at 2:30 p.m. with pick-up lasting until 3 p.m.
There likely will be a short day on Friday, Aug. 8 in preparation for that evening’s opening performance starting at 7 o’clock.
The performance weekend also will feature a Saturday show at 7 p.m. and a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.
