Samaritan Group seeking volunteers for winter shelter

CHESTERTOWN — Volunteers and those who are interested in volunteering are encouraged to attend the nonprofit Samaritan Group’s open house on Thursday, Dec. 7.

The event will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene, 6943 Church Hill Road near Kingstown.

Light refreshments will be offered.

For newcomers, this will be an opportunity to learn about the Samaritan Group and how you can become involved.

The nonprofit, which is celebrating 21 years of service to Kent and northern Queen Anne’s communities, operates an emergency winter shelter from January through March at three churches in the Chestertown area.

According to a news release, shelter needs from volunteers for the 2024 season include 90 meal hosts, 180 evening shift hosts and 90 overnight shift sleepers.

The shelter will open Jan. 2 and remain open through the last day in March. It operates from 5:30 p.m. overnight to 8 a.m.

During the remaining nine months of the year, the Samaritan Group works in partnership with the Kent County Department of Social Services and other nonprofits, including the Good Neighbor Fund, to offer outreach services that provide assistance with utility bills, coordination with landlords and one-time payment to help prevent evictions.
