SEED School defeats Kent in shortened game

BALTIMORE — The Trojans head to Parkside High School in Salisbury on Friday after getting banged up last week at the SEED School of Maryland.

Play stopped with about five minutes remaining in the first half Sept. 20 after a Kent County running back was tackled aggressively and suffered what ultimately was diagnosed as a concussion, according to head coach Harold Somerville.

The player was transported by ambulance to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was treated and released.

The SEED School held a 20-0 lead when the game was called.

The Sabres (2-1) were led by freshman Malcom Smith Jr., who completed nine passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Deonze Eldridge accounted for 64 of those yards and a touchdown.

For Kent County (1-2), Jonah Somerville returned a punt 85 yards for a TD that was called back for a block in the back penalty.

Coach Somerville said the SEED School had done its homework in scouting Kent County.

While the Sabres were aggressive and “pumped up,” Somerville said, he described the tackle on what turned out to be the final play of the game as a “clean hit.”

Somerville also said the injury suffered by the Kent County player was unsettling to his teammates.

“It’s the first time they had experienced a player being hurt to that extent,” Somerville told The Evening Enterprise in a telephone interview Wednesday, Sept. 25. “We [the coaches] checked with all the players over the weekend to see how they were doing.”

Practices this week have gone well, he added.
