Shelter Alliance to open clothing closet in Kent Plaza

CHESTERTOWN — The newly formed The Shelter Alliance is opening a storefront where clothing will be distributed at no cost to individuals of all ages who provide identification and documentation of need.

The Shelter Closet, located in the Kent Plaza Shopping Center at 711 Washington Ave., Chestertown, also can be patronized by the general public for a monetary donation.

The limit is one bag of clothing per week per individual.

The Shelter Closet will be open only on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hours may be adjusted depending on need and staffing.

Weather permitting, the first day will be Jan. 8.

Shelter Alliance members and community volunteers will staff The Shelter Closet.

Volunteer forms will be available to the public at the store.

Currently, only cold weather clothing and accessories will be accepted for donation during store hours.

Do not drop off donations at either the front or rear of the building.

A news release states, “Though the goal of The Shelter Alliance remains to find and operate a year-round shelter for those in need, The Shelter Closet is filling an interim need for clothing distribution during the winter months.”

The Shelter Alliance Inc. is a component fund of the Mid-Shore Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to which donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Checks payable to the Mid-Shore Community Foundation with the designation of The Shelter Alliance in the memo line can be mailed to P.O. Box 2, Chestertown, MD 21620.
