CHESTERTOWN — Shirley Hales is the featured artist throughout the month of June at The Artists’ Gallery in Chestertown, where she will present her newest body of work, “A Sense of Place,” composed of watercolor and acrylic paintings.
The public is invited to visit The Artists’ Gallery’s opening reception for Hales on First Friday, June 5 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. for light refreshments and to meet the artist.
The Artists’ Gallery is located at 239 High St. in downtown Chestertown.
According to a news release, Hales’ “sense of place” paintings express her personal connection to scenes she holds dear to her heart and the feelings that such places evoke. A brilliant sunset, misty marsh morning, shady country road or dunes of a sandy beach arouse a sense of tranquility, calm and serene beauty, providing a welcome respite in today’s hectic world.
She hopes the viewer will make the same connection.
Hales’ love of painting on a professional level blossomed in 2000 while she was studying at the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia.
She has been a professional artist for 26 years, and has received awards and recognition throughout her career.
Since 2023, Hales has been an exhibiting artist with The Artists’ Gallery.
Most recently she has exhibited with Eastern Shore Arts in Rock Hall.
Hales is a member of the Working Artists Forum in Easton, and a frequent exhibitor with Local Color and the Waterfowl Festival in Easton.
She is the founder and past president of the Harbour View Gallery in Cape Coral, Florida.
She teaches painting at Arts Bonita in Bonita Springs, Florida and for Women of Watercolor in Naples, Florida.
A native of West Virginia, Hales lived in Virginia until she and her husband, David, moved to southwest Florida 20 years ago.
They still maintain their home of 30 years in Rock Hall.
Both locations provide endless inspiration for “A Sense of Place.”
