Shore cagers net 5th win in a row

CHESTERTOWN — Washington’s women’s basketball team ran its win streak to five games in a row Saturday.

Led by the double-digit scoring of Kaitlyn Boggs, Abby Meredith and Emma Robinson, Washington (11-6) held off Haverford, 65-61, to improve to 4-3 in the Centennial Conference and in playoff contention.

As a team, the Shore ladies shot 44% from the field — compared to the Fords’ 36% — and received scoring from nine players.

Boggs led all players with 16 points in just 18 minutes.

Robinson (10 points) and Kiersten Rose (eight points) contributed 13 and 10 rebounds, respectively.

Haverford (8-9, 2-5 CC) boasted five scorers in double figures, including Brianna Feifer with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.

After a back-and-forth opening six and a half minutes that produced an 8-8 tie, Washington embarked on a 7-0 run to pull ahead for good. The go-ahead basket was freshman Sarah Oleary’s 3-pointer with 3 minutes, 11 seconds remaining in the first frame.

Washington led 18-10 at the end of the first quarter and 33-20 at halftime.

Meredith scored seven of her 15 points in the first half, while Audrey Jakway scored 10 points for Haverford.

Jakway (13 points, seven rebounds) ultimately would foul out with 4:56 to play.

Washington took its largest lead at 13 points, 39-26, about three and a half minutes into the second half.

In time, Haverford would close to within a point, 55-54, on a pair of Caroline Orza free throws with 3:12 to play.

Washington scored eight of the next 10 points, bookended by Meredith buckets, to extend the spread to 63-56.

Boggs hit a pair of free throws to keep it a seven-point game, 65-58, with only 6 seconds to play.

Haverford’s Shae Mercer knocked down a three just ahead of the horn for the final score.

This game kicked off the Shore ladies’ conference schedule in earnest. They will travel to Franklin & Marshall tomorrow and Bryn Mawr on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Washington’s next home game is Wednesday, Feb. 5 against McDaniel.
