Shore cagers squander 12-point lead, then rally to win 3rd straight game

BALTIMORE — Washington College’s women ran their win streak to three games in a row Monday night, putting away their hosts from Notre Dame of Maryland, 54-47, with a closing 11-4 run.

The Shore ladies improved to 9-6 on the season.

They received game highs of 15 points from Kaitlyn Boggs and nine rebounds from Kiersten Rose.

Eight women contributed on the scoreboard for the winners with the starting five of Boggs, Abby Meredith (12), Emma Robinson (8), Karry Kelliher (7) and Rose (5) accounting for 47 of Washington’s 54 points.

Amani Watts (13 points, 9 rebounds) and Amya Durham (10 points) led the home team, which had its three-game winning streak halted.

Notre Dame (7-11) led three times in the back-and-forth opening 3 minutes and 3 seconds — 2-0 and 4-2 on back-to-back jumpers from Watts and 6-5 on an Allison Holman bucket.

Washington pulled ahead, 7-6, on Meredith’s shot from close range with 6:41 remaining in the first quarter.

The Shore ladies would go on to lead by as many as 12 points — 38-26 — on a Meredith free throw with 4:29 elapsed in the second half.

Notre Dame closed the third quarter on a 9-1 run as part of a larger 17-5 run that knotted the score at 43 on Durham’s jumper with 5:39 to play.

Washington regained the lead for good 19 seconds later on a Robinson jump shot in the paint, and the visiting team scored 11 of the last 15 points to salt away the win.
