Shore ladies earn 1st-ever Centennial playoff berth in soccer

CARLISLE, Pa. — Washington College’s women’s soccer team has extended its season to this week’s Centennial Conference championship tournament, earning the first playoff berth since the program was launched in 1998.

The Shore ladies are 10-6-2 overall, the most wins in program history.

Tom Reilly, who was brought on as head coach in 2017, has the most wins, best winning percentage and is the longest-tenured coach in program history.

Seeded sixth in the six-team conference tournament, Washington (4-5-1 CC) will travel to No. 3 seed Dickinson (7-2-1 CC, 12-4-3) on Tuesday night, Nov. 4.

Dickinson defeated Washington, 1-0, in the regular season Sept. 27 at Dickinson.

In other first-round action tomorrow, No. 4 seed Franklin & Marshall (5-3-2 CC, 10-4-4) will host No. 5 seed Gettysburg (4-5-1 CC, 7-8-3).

Tournament seedings and matchups were set following the conclusion of Saturday’s regular-season finales.

Swarthmore (9-0-1 CC, 13-2-3), which already had locked up the No. 1 seed entering Saturday’s action, played to a scoreless draw with Haverford. The tie knocked the Fords (3-6-1 CC, 6-8-4) out of playoff contention, as they needed a win to have a shot at postseason.

Johns Hopkins (8-2 CC, 13-4-1) shut out Ursinus, 2-0, to clinch the No. 2 seed and the other first-round bye.

F&M (5-3-2 CC, 10-4-4) ) defeated Bryn Mawr, 4-0, to lock up the No. 4 seed.

Dickinson closed out the regular season with a 4-1 victory at Muhlenberg, while Washington nabbed the No. 6 seed despite a 1-0 loss at Gettysburg.

Swarthmore and Hopkins will host Friday’s semifinals, with opponents to be determined based on Tuesday’s first-round results.

As the top seed, Swarthmore will host the lower seeded first-round winner.

Hopkins, which is seeking its fourth straight Centennial Conference championship, will host the higher seeded first-round winner.

The winner of Friday’s semifinals will meet for the championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 9 at the highest remaining seed’s field.
