ROCK HALL — With its photo-finish victory over Mystery in the final race Sunday, July 20, Silver Heel claimed the Whittum Trophy as the overall winner on elapsed time in Rock Hall Yacht Club’s log canoe regatta.
Wick Dudley skippered Silver Heel, which improved its finish on elapsed time in each race of the three-race series — from third, to second, to first.
Island Blossom, skippered by Patrick Penwell, was first overall on corrected time and took home the Commodore’s Cup.
The weekend regatta featured seven of the historic sailing vessels: Island Blossom, Silver Heel, Persistence, Mystery, Island Bird, Jay Dee and Billie P. Hall.
Racing was on the Chester River.
The courses were 4 to 6 nautical miles starting from the middle of the Chester, outside of the mouth of the Langford to the mouth of the Corsica River off Spaniard Point and to the mouth of Grays Inn Creek.
Due to lack of wind in the afternoon, there was only one race on Saturday, July 19.
Two races were sailed on Sunday — back to back, with the second race starting 20 minutes after the last boat in the first race crossed the finish line. One boat capsized in the first race and did not finish.
