SNOW HILL — The talent on Kent County High School’s girls indoor track team supports the principle that it’s the quality, not the quantity, that makes the difference.
In the season opener Dec. 10 at the Worcester County Recreation Center, KCHS’ tiny team of three girls accumulated 30 points to place sixth among 16 Eastern Shore schools. Kent County was only 5.5 points out of fourth, trailing James Bennett (35.5) and Snow Hill (33).
Much larger schools with much larger rosters carried the day: Kent Island (97), Stephen Decatur (61) and Queen Anne’s (40).
The Trojans boasted a pair of runners-up, junior Janey Depp in the 3200 meters and senior Ke’yare Hawkins in the shot put.
Depp is coming off an MVP cross country season where she led Kent County’s girls to their first-ever region title, while Hawkins holds the school record of 35 feet, 3.25 inches in the shot put.
Freshman Keelyn Clayton is new to indoor track, but already has distinguished herself as a rising star in field hockey. A North Bayside Conference all-star in voting by coaches, Clayton helped the Trojans defy the odds this fall as they captured a region title and punched their ticket to the state quarterfinals.
The top place-finisher for Kent County’s boys was senior Trent Johnson, a triple-threat in cross country, indoor track and track and field, who was fifth in the 500 meters. He was less than three-tenths of a second out of third.
In the team scoring, KCHS’ boys placed 13th in a two-way tie with Queen Anne’s.
Steve Wheeler and Lakesha Hoxter are coaching the Trojans.
Printed here are results from the Dec. 10 meet.
As a rule, the winter indoor meets draw a lot of schools of varying enrollments and a lot of competitors. For this meet, for example, there were nearly 40 entries in some track events and 20 or more entries in both girls and boys shot put.
