Spring makeover led by Chestertown Garden Club

CHESTERTOWN — As has become customary, the Chestertown Garden Club spruced up Fountain Park and Monument Park on Saturday, April 26 as part of the local Earth Day celebration. There was help from community volunteers including members of Washington College’s Phi Delta Theta fraternity and advisor Jack Despeaux.

The garden club also had a booth with children’s activities about birds, since Chestertown in 2024 met the criteria of a Bird City with its commitment to improving bird habitats and engaging residents in bird-related activities.

Tomorrow is May Mart, the Chestertown Garden Club’s yearly sale of noninvasive perennials and shrubs, as well as natives, annuals, house plants, herbs and vegetables. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the downtown Memorial Park Plaza, rain or shine.

Other offerings will include homemade baked goods; a raffle for a $100 gift certificate from the Chestertown business of your choice; and food and drink for purchase courtesy of Happy Chicken Bakery.

May Mart is the Chestertown Garden Club’s major fundraiser of the year. All proceeds go toward the beautification, restoration and maintenance of the town’s Fountain and Monument (also called Memorial) parks. The club also decorates the spaces with greens for the winter holiday season.

The Chestertown Garden Club was founded in 1931 to bring together area women with a mutual interest in gardening and environmental awareness.

Today, the club has a membership of more than 60 women and men who contribute labor, time and resources to improve and maintain Chestertown’s public spaces.

The club also provides informative meetings and lectures as well as sponsoring local flower shows and trips to area gardens.

The current president is Secethia Boardley-Davis.

If you miss the main event, you can look for the garden club’s information table downtown at First Friday on May 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. There will be plants and raffle tickets for sale.
