CHESTERTOWN — Police here on Thursday, June 5 apprehended a Fairlee area man suspected of robbing the clerk of a convenience store at knifepoint the night before.
Nytre Nickael Green, 24, was served an arrest warrant charging him with robbery; armed robbery; first- and second-degree assault; and theft, $100 to less than $1,500.
He is being held in the Kent County Detention Center without bond.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for July 2 in the District Court for Kent County, at which time a judge will determine if there is probable cause to believe that Green committed the offenses.
The robbery occurred shortly before 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4.
According to the charging document, a man, subsequently identified as Green, entered the 7-Eleven store in the 200-block of Maple Avenue and asked the male clerk for a drink of water. Green then allegedly walked behind the counter, brandishing what appeared to be a knife, and forced the clerk, age 22, to open the cash register.
Green allegedly grabbed about $1,100 out of the register and then left the store.
The clerk told responding officer PFC Eric Nunez of the Chestertown Police Department that he “backed himself into a corner and kept his arms raised for fear of being assaulted or injured,” according to the charging document.
No injuries were reported.
The clerk described the knife as having a black handle and long blade.
Police used surveillance footage from the store to help identify Green as a suspect, according to the charging document.
A warrant for Green’s arrest was issued.
Following up on a tip, CPD took Green into custody at about 5:20 p.m. on June 5 — as Chestertown Police Chief Ron Dixon was preparing to host a town hall-style meeting with residents to discuss their concerns about the recent spike in serious crime and to share ideas on how to make the community safer.
The Kent County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police assisted in the investigation.
