Suspect in robbery, assault of Washington College student charged with unrelated gun offenses

CHESTERTOWN — Evidence obtained from a search and seizure warrant executed as part of an investigation into a strong-armed robbery here in April has led to unrelated gun charges filed against the alleged assailant.

On June 5, the Chestertown Police Department served Kyri De’Sean Brown, 32, of Chestertown with a summons for illegal possession of a regulated firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

He is being held in the Kent County Detention Center without bond pending the outcome of a preliminary hearing in the District Court for Kent County on July 11.

According to the charging document, CPD officers seized a Lorcin .380 caliber handgun when they served a court-authorized search warrant at Brown’s residence in the 300-block of Calvert Street on May 21.

The gun, which was not registered, contained five rounds of ammunition in the magazine, according to the application for charges filed by Cpl. Chris Schwink of the Chestertown Police Department.

Convicted of a drug-related offense in 2022, Brown was prohibited from possessing a regulated firearm.

Police also seized an Uzi-style pistol designed to look like a real firearm that was actually a pellet gun, according to the charging document.

The purpose of the warrant was to attempt to locate property reportedly taken in the robbery and assault on April 17 and a particular item of clothing that was worn by the alleged assailant.

On May 19, Brown had been served an arrest warrant charging him with robbery; theft, $1,500 to less than $25,000; and second-degree assault.

The charges stem from an alleged incident at about 11 p.m. April 17 in the area of the 300-block of Washington Avenue.

The victim, identified as a Washington College student, reported that he was assaulted and robbed of his backpack as he was walking to campus from the downtown area of Chestertown.

According to the charging document, the backpack contained a laptop valued at $1,600; earbuds valued at $120; a camera and multiple lenses valued at $5,280; eyeglasses; and an EpiPen.

Surveillance footage from a business in the 200-block of Maple Avenue assisted in the identification of Brown as a suspect, according to the charging document.

A warrant for Brown’s arrest was issued on May 15.

On the robbery, theft and assault charges, Brown has a preliminary hearing set for June 16, when a judge will determine if there is probable cause to believe that Brown committed the offenses.
