Suspected drugs seized; driver fails to stop, flees on foot

CHESTERTOWN — Following a brief pursuit, the Kent County Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 5 charged a Centreville man with drug-related offenses that include possession of a narcotic with intent to distribute.

The suspect, identified as Shelton Maurice Wilson Jr., 39, also is accused of fleeing on foot.

He is currently being held in the Kent County Detention Center without bond.

A preliminary hearing in the District Court for Kent County is set for Jan. 31. At that time a judge will determine if there is probable cause to believe that Wilson committed the offenses.

According to a sheriff’s office news release, DFC Colin Rhodes attempted to stop a Honda Civic for alleged traffic violations at 10:20 p.m. on state Route 213 (Washington Avenue) at Hadaway Drive.

The driver, subsequently identified as Wilson, allegedly failed to stop.

“Following a brief pursuit, the vehicle was involved in a collision after which the operator fled on foot,” according to the news release. 

Once DFC Rhodes apprehended Wilson, DFC Michael Piasecki and K-9 Draco scanned Wilson’s vehicle. After the dog gave a positive alert, DFC Rhodes searched the vehicle and located a suspected controlled dangerous substance, according to the news release.

Wilson was charged with possession of a narcotic with intent to distribute; possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute in a school zone; possession of a controlled dangerous substance that is not cannabis; possession of paraphernalia (three counts); and resist/interfere with arrest.

Among the traffic charges he faces are: attempt by driver to elude uniformed police by failing to stop;  attempt by driver to elude uniformed police by fleeing on foot; reckless driving; negligent driving; changing lanes when unsafe; failure to drive on the right half of the roadway when required; driving in excess of reasonable and prudent speed; failure to control vehicle speed to avoid a collision; driving, attempting to drive without required license and authorization; driving on suspended license; and failure to stop at circular red signal.
