KENNEDYVILLE — That’s whipped cream from an aerosol can that Beth Hill is smelling as she helps members of the Clover Calf Club prep for the upcoming Maryland 4-H Dairy Skillathon Contest.
Hill is the principal agent associate for 4-H youth development in Kent County.
Our photo was taken Tuesday night, March 18 before the Clover Calf Club’s monthly meeting in the church hall of Shrewsbury Parish.
Mary Brown and Valerie Mason are the club leaders.
The state 4-H Dairy Skillathon Contest is Saturday, March 22 at the Carroll County Extension Office in Westminster.
Four-H’ers will compete as individuals in three divisions: Juniors, 8-10; Intermediates, 11-13; and Seniors, 14-18.
The quiz phase of the contest may include questions about the total dairy industry — multiple choice and true/false.
The stations phase will consist of a series of stations or tables where 4-H’ers will respond to the requirements of the station. According to the Maryland 4-H Animal Sciences Program Guidebook, examples of stations that may be used include, but are not limited to: dairy quality assurance information; dairy breed identification; dairy equipment identification; feed identification and reading a feed tag; sire selection and reading a pedigree; animal care; anatomy and physiology; and dairy product identification, like whipped cream.
It’s a lot!
