Trojans continue to track down indoor success

SNOW HILL — Tyrell Fennell is making fast tracks, literally.

In his most recent indoor meet, the Kent County High School junior was the runner-up in the 55 meters and anchored the sprint relay that placed fifth as the Trojans continue to close the gap with their opponents.

Fennell’s time of 6.77 seconds at the Jan. 3 meet was second only to Parkside senior Nasir Holden’s winning time of 6.65.

There were 48 speedsters in this event.

KCHS’ 4×200-meter relay of Trent Johnson, Colbyn Lopez, Taion Johnson and Fennell, that stopped the timer in 1 minute, 44.45 seconds, was literally a step or two out of medaling; Colonel Richardson was third in 1:44.02 and Milford (Delaware) was fourth in 1:44.07.

On the girls side, sophomore Alden Swanson, who was a state qualifier in cross country in the fall, had the best finish — sixth in the 1600 meters and seventh at half that distance.

In field events, Kent County sophomore Ke’yare Hawkins remained unbeaten in the shot put through four meets. Her winning throw of 33 feet, 10.5 inches last week equaled the school record she re-established on Dec. 13. There were 37 entries.

Junior Gavin Larrimore is aiming for a school record of his own. He placed fourth (of 43) with a throw of 40-3.5, just shy of his PR of 40-8.5 realized at the Dec. 20 Pat Russo Invitational.

The boys shot put record at KCHS is 44-9.5; it’s the oldest program record, dating to 1982.

The Jan. 3 meet was held at the Worcester County Recreation Center in Snow Hill, which is where all the Trojans’ regular-season meets are held. As has become the rule, it was another huge meet with more than 20 high schools from Maryland and Delaware. Some of the individual events had more than 50 entries.
