CENTREVILLE — A 21-1 run to close out the first half put the Trojans on the road to victory Dec. 13 at The Gunston School.
Shakur Wilson came off the bench to score five of his seven points in the game-changing second quarter, when Kent County extended its lead to 40-14.
Also contributing to the 21-point, second-quarter outburst were Jonah Somerville, Gavin Miller, Rah ‘Zir Wilson, JySir Valentine, Kiyan Hynson and Elijah Wilson.
The healthy halftime lead held up for the Trojans, who went on to score a commanding 68-38 victory.
They won for the first time in 2024-25 after an 0-3 start, and the 68 points is a season high.
“We played hard,” Kent County coach Sobaye Scott told The Evening Enterprise in a telephone interview.
“We ran our offenses and we listened [to coaching] on defense,” he added. “We went full-court man the whole game, and scored a lot of points off of turnovers.”
With Somerville and Valentine contributing six points apiece, Kent County held a modest 19-13 lead after the opening frame.
The Trojans asserted themselves over the next eight minutes, erupting for 21 points while holding their hosts to a single point — a free throw from freshman Max Rene.
Gunston cut into the deficit in the third quarter, with James McDonald and Amir Williams scoring five and four points, respectively, to shave the deficit to 49-28.
The home team would get no closer, however, as Kent County scored 19 of the final 29 points.
Valentine led all players with 15 points.
Somerville added 14, followed by Rah ‘Zir Wilson with nine, Hynson and Shakur Wilson each with seven, and Miller and Elijah Wilson each with five.
Kent County received scoring from 10 players.
All 11 Trojans who made the trip saw playing time; coach Scott cleared his bench by halftime.
McDonald (12 points) was the top scorer for Gunston.
