Washington-Dickinson game here Saturday has playoff implications

LANCASTER, Pa. — With ground to make up and not a lot of time to do so if they want to clinch a berth in the Centennial Conference lacrosse tournament, the Shore ladies are in a must-win situation Saturday when Dickinson’s women come to Chestertown.

The Red Devils (4-2 CC, 9-4) have a tenuous hold on the fourth seed with just three games remaining in the regular season.

Washington (2-4 CC, 7-6) is still in contention for a spot in the six-school tournament, currently seventh but just one win out of sixth.

The opening draw Saturday in this key Centennial match-up is at 1 p.m.

The Shore ladies are winless in their last four conference games, most recently coming out on the short end of a 20-5 decision at No. 3-ranked Franklin & Marshall (6-1 CC, 12-3) on April 13.

This was the Diplomats’ fourth win in a row by double digits against a league foe, and their seventh straight win overall.

All-America attacker Lydia Cassilly (46-25-71) scored five goals and assisted on another for F&M, which boasted a total of six players who each scored at least twice.

All told, 10 players found the back of the net for the Diplomats, including Sarah Bowyer, a senior midfielder from Chestertown.

Sophomore attacker Mia Salvatierra, with two goals, was Washington’s only multiple scorer. She leads the team in goals (26) and points (42).

F&M, the defending conference champion, opened the game on a 4-0 run and conceded just one goal in the first half to take a 13-1 lead into the locker room.

The Diplomats led 6-1 at the end of the first frame.

Cassilly completed her hat trick with a man-up goal just 30 seconds into the second quarter. By halftime, she’d already scored her fifth goal.

Bowyer’s goal — unassisted and on her only shot of the game — extended the spread to 18-3 with 9 minutes, 33 seconds remaining.

The 5-foot-11 Bowyer finished with four draw controls; she is second on the team with 46.

She has appeared in all 15 games this season, all starts.
