Washington moves up to 4th in Centennial with sweep of Bryn Mawr; win streak at 7

CHESTERTOWN — Seven.

That’s the number of consecutive games that Washington’s women’s basketball team has won, bookended with victories over Centennial Conference opponent Bryn Mawr.

On Saturday in the Bern Schwartz Fitness and Athletic Center here, senior forward Kiersten Rose scored a career-high 21 points and 6-foot-2 junior center Kaitlyn Boggs contributed a double-double of 13 points and game-best 10 rebounds as Washington completed a home-and-away series sweep of Bryn Mawr, 60-34.

Washington improved to 6-3 in the CC, trailing only three-time defending champion Gettysburg (8-0), Johns Hopkins (8-1) and Ursinus (7-3) in the 11-school conference.

Meantime, Bryn Mawr dropped to 0-9 in the Centennial.

The Shore ladies took a 4-2 lead about three minutes in after back-to-back layups from Rose, and never trailed the rest of the way.

Washington (13-6) closed the half on a 17-7 run, sparked by six points from Rose, to stretch its lead to 27-15 at the break.

Junior guard Abby Meredith scored eight of her 10 points in the third quarter to help Washington pull ahead, 44-26.

Rose scored seven points in a row in the final frame to increase the spread to 51-28 with 6 minutes, 33 seconds remaining.

Washington took its largest lead of the afternoon, 60-32, on a Maggie Lawrence free throw with 31 seconds to play.

The Shore ladies opened their week Wednesday, Jan. 29 with a 61-48 wire-to-wire win at Franklin & Marshall, opening the game on a run of 10 unanswered points.

Senior Karry Kelliher’s layup on the locals’ second shot of the game gave them a 2-0 lead they never surrendered.

Boggs scored the next four points, Meredith hit a jumper, and then Kelliher sunk two free throws to make it 10-0 with 5:06 to play in the first frame.

Trailing 18-9, F&M (4-6 CC, 13-8) scored eight of the first nine points of the second quarter to pull within 19-17 on an Ally Trebelev layup with 6:49 remaining in the half.

Kelliher and Trebelev (10 points) traded field goals to keep it a one-possession game, 21-19, before Washington finished the half on a 6-0 run to cushion its lead at 27-19.

The closest that F&M would get the rest of the way was four points, 42-38, on a Quinn Gilligan pull-up jumper outside the arc with just under eight minutes to play.

Washington scored the next seven points, capped by a pair of Boggs’ free throws, to boost its lead to 49-38 with 4:40 to go.

Washington took its largest lead of the game at 16 points, 60-44, on a Kelliher jumper with 22 seconds remaining.

WC outscored the home team, 19-10, over the final 7:43, beginning with a pair of Avery Thomas free throws, to salt away the win.

Kelliher finished with 15 points, trailing only teammates Meredith and Boggs who led all scorers with 18 points apiece.

Collectively, Meredith, Boggs and Kelliher were 14-of-16 from the free-throw line.

Rose led all players with 10 rebounds.

NEXT UP: Washington returns home Wednesday, Feb. 5 against conference foe McDaniel (4-4 CC, 13-6). It’s a twin bill, with the women tipping off at 6 p.m. and the men following at 8 p.m.
