WC women’s league makes donations totaling $20,000

CHESTERTOWN — Following what has been described as “a successful year,” the Women’s League of Washington College in late June donated $15,000 to The Helen Gibson Scholarship and $5,000 to the college’s Miller Library.

On hand for the check presentations were college President Mike Sosulksi, Dean of Library and Academic Technology Mary Alice Ball and Ruth Shoge, emeritus dean of library and academic technology.

According to its website, the Women’s League of Washington College was founded in 1951 by Helen S. Gibson, then first lady of the college. She saw the new group as a way to build closer ties between the college and its surrounding community of Chestertown.

Membership in the organization is open to all women who wish to become part of the Washington College community.

Over the years the nonprofit WLWC has expanded its efforts to include offering parents the opportunity to provide “exam care packages” to their students, informing members about programs at the college, support of the college’s food pantry and, most recently, volunteering as ushers at graduation.
