Wearing its heart on its trunk

CHESTERTOWN — Anyone who regularly travels Worton Road surely has seen the large sycamore that is dressed up for many holidays — always with a ribbon in a seasonal color around its trunk.

The tree is easily 200 years old, according to Andy Simmons, chair of the Kent County Forestry Board.

“It sits out in plain view,” Simmons said. “You just can’t miss it.”

Back in the days when black and white film was the norm, this majestic sycamore was the subject of the majority of entries in the Kent County 4-H photography contest, according to another member of the local forestry board.

What you might not know is that this tree, which stands 105 feet in height, has been nominated for Maryland’s Big Tree Program.

Happy Valentine’s Day.
