7-3 Shore ladies take their game to McDaniel on Saturday

CHESTERTOWN — The Shore ladies head to McDaniel College tomorrow afternoon looking to distance themselves from last week’s second-half collapse at home against their Centennial Conference rivals from Swarthmore.

Trailing 5-1 at the end of the first quarter and 8-4 at intermission, the Garnet outscored their hosts 13-1 in the second half en route to a 17-9 victory on March 28.

In the third quarter, Swarthmore did not commit a single turnover, led 12-6 in shots and ran off six goals while Brooke Carrier [season-high 12 saves] stopped all five shots she saw.

The storyline was very similar in the final frame when Swarthmore [2-1 CC, 9-2] scored six more goals in succession — part of a larger run of 13 unanswered goals that began with 22 seconds remaining in the first half — to extend the spread to 16-8 with 7 minutes, 18 seconds remaining.

Washington [1-1, 7-3] ended the scoring drought when Mac Grogan found the back of the net with 6:20 to go.

Swarthmore’s Annabel Stifler closed out the scoring with 2:09 remaining.

Aubree Daugherty led the way for the winners with a career-high seven points on four goals and three assists. Kela Watts potted five goals, also a career best. Stifler scored four times. Kate Fox contributed two goals and won 11 draw controls.

Grogan [two assists], Lis Braswell and Malery Andrews each scored twice for Washington. Braswell’s goals, both unassisted, came in Washington’s 3-0 start.

The Shore ladies took their largest lead at 6-1 on Lexi Vennera’s solo run with 11:11 remaining in the first half.

MaryCate Anson [seven draws] recorded her 250th career draw with 2:51 to play in the first quarter and now sits at 256.

Washington opened conference play March 21 with a 13-9 victory at home against Dickinson. Anna Wilson [two assists] and Piper Evans [Chestertown, Queen Anne’s County High School] each scored four goals for the locals.

Wilson’s unassisted goal 3:23 into the second half broke a 7-7 tie, and Washington led the rest of the way.

Another Wilson goal, this time off a look from Mia Salvatierra, made it 10-8 with 1:34 remaining in the third quarter and held up as the game-winner.

Salvatierra, assisted by Wilson, tacked on the insurance goal 56 seconds later in an extra-man situation.

The Shore ladies extended their win streak to four in a row March 25 with a 20-16 upset of then top 20-ranked Christopher Newport.

With the scored knotted at 15-all, Washington scored the next five goals — a run started by Evans’ man-up goal with 12:04 to play.

After Evans’ go-ahead goal, Salvatierra and Braswell each scored twice for a 20-15 lead with 3:22 remaining.

Evans [two assists] led all players with five goals.

Salvatierra [four assists] and Braswell each contributed four goals, Andrews had a had trick and Wilson scored two goals.

Salvatierra [151 goals, 89 assists] moved up to fifth in program history with 240 points.

Christopher Newport [9-3] is coached by Kent Island High School graduate Lisa Valentine, who played collegiately for the University of Maryland. She was an assistant at Washington College from 2008-11.
