CHESTERTOWN — Washington defeated Dickinson under the lights of Kibler Field on Saturday night, 2-1, despite being outshot, 14-10, and earning three fewer penalty corners than its guest.
It was a critical win for the locals, who are on the bubble of qualifying for the Centennial Conference playoff tournament.
Washington is 3-3 in the conference, locked into a four-way tie for fifth.
Six teams qualify for postseason.
Washington has four conference games remaining, including three on the road beginning with No. 10-ranked Bryn Mawr on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 23.
Here on Saturday night, junior Emma Campbell’s goal with 4 minutes, 27 seconds remaining broke a 1-1 tie and held up to be the gamer-winner. Freshman Tara Radebaugh was credited with the assist.
Washington improved to 8-6 on the season, rebounding from back-to-back losses to No. 17 Ursinus (9-4, 5-2 CC) and No. 4 Johns Hopkins (13-2, 7-0 CC).
The Shore ladies dented the scoreboard in the 10th minute off a penalty corner. Radebaugh played the ball over to sophomore Natalie Watkinson, whose shot hit the post and then was inadvertently knocked in by the Dickinson keeper.
Dickinson (4-9, 1-5 CC) deadlocked with 5:34 remaining on Maggie Carson’s putback of a blocked shot.
Just 1:07 later, Campbell, at the left post, scored off a penalty corner when she redirected Radebaugh’s pass from the top of the circle.
Neither team would get off a shot over the final four minutes and change.
Washington’s Charlotte Schurman was credited with eight saves.
