Mayor calls for ‘fair taxation’ for Chestertown

CHESTERTOWN — Mayor David Foster, left, on Saturday at the weekly downtown farmers market continued his lobbying for a tax differential or tax rebate. Pictured here talking to Chestertown resident Kurt Smith, Foster handed out a one-page flyer titled “Call for Fair Taxation for Chestertown” outlining his position that the town is overtaxed.

First as a councilman and now as mayor, Foster has asserted that town residents are typically required to pay both for their local police and for their county sheriff’s office even though the primary responsibility for the sheriff’s office is for residents living outside of town. He also has said that similar double taxation is imposed for street maintenance.

In the handout that he distributed on Saturday, Foster announced two “special public meetings” to discuss the issue: Thursday, Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. at Chestertown Town Hall, 118 N. Cross St., and Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. with the Kent County Commissioners at the R. Clayton Mitchell Jr. Kent County Government Center, 400 High St.
