KENNEDYVILLE — A brick building in the 12000-block of Augustine Herman Highway that once was the “Kennedyville School” was reduced to rubble Saturday, March 1 when the Kennedyville Volunteer Fire Company conducted a controlled burn.

According to online records of the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation, the fire company purchased the 2-acre property from the Kent County Commissioners in 1993. The primary structure was built in 1915, according to the SDAT website.

For many years, the lot behind the school was the home field for a youth baseball team.

Fun fact: Before he was elected to Congress in 1991, Wayne Gilchrest, while a history and civics teacher at Kent County High School, coached a team sponsored by the Kennedyville Parents Association.
