Local Democrats organizing ‘No Kings’ rally in Chestertown

CHESTERTOWN — The Kent County Democratic Central Committee is sponsoring a rally Saturday, June 14 beginning at 1 p.m. in Chestertown’s downtown Fountain Park as part of the “No Kings” nationwide Day of Defiance.

This is to be a peaceful protest, organizers say, and will reflect “concern about the perceived authoritarian excesses and abuses of power by the current regime,” according to a news release from the Kent County Democratic Central Committee.

This is a rain or shine event; participants are asked to carpool if possible.

There will be several local speakers, including: Melvin Rapelyea, chairman of the Kent County Democratic Central Committee; Chestertown Mayor David Foster; Eamon Lindsay, a rising Kent County High School junior and president of Kent County Young Democrats; Katie Stevens, who will speak as an autistic, seeing-impaired person impacted by the Trump administration; Misty Colache, a veteran, social media podcaster and millennial, who will speak about what the average citizen can do to make a difference; and Bill Flook, president of the Democratic Club of Kent County.

Participants are asked to bring signs and flags to wave in town after the program.

Chestertown’s rally also will honor two national anniversaries: the adoption of the American flag in 1777 and the establishment of the U.S. armed services in 1775.

“Organizers urge everyone to express their love of country even as they demonstrate against the actions of the current administration,” the news release states.
