WORTON — The Blood Bank of Delmarva made a stop at Kent County High School on Tuesday, April 15 for the second blood drive of the academic year sponsored by the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society.
According to NHS advisors Lauren Shaw and Johanna Cohen, 48 out of the 54 available appointment slots were filled.
Most of the blood donors were KCHS students and staff.
Pictured here is KCHS junior Maddie Dickerson, 17, who was donating for the second time in 2024-25.
When asked why she donates blood, Maddie responded, “Because I can.”
Founded in 1954, the Blood Bank of Delmarva is a nonprofit community-based blood center that provides lifesaving blood and blood products to 1.5 million people and 19 hospitals on the Delmarva Peninsula.
According to the American Red Cross, every 2 seconds someone in the United States needs blood and/or platelets.
The average red blood cell transfusion is about three units.
A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 units of blood.
Blood and platelets cannot be manufactured; they can only come from volunteer donors.
