Boggs nets career 1,000th point; helps Shore ladies avenge OT loss at Bryn Mawr

CHESTERTOWN — Averaging a point a minute, senior center Kaitlyn Boggs scored a season-high 27 points to lead all players as Washington thumped conference rival Bryn Mawr, 72-27, in women’s basketball here Saturday.

Boggs was 11-of-21 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the free-throw line as she reached the career 1,000-point milestone — the 10th player in program history to accomplish that remarkable feat, and the first since Meghan Tait (1,068 points) and Sally O’Donnell (1,018 points) did so in 2008-2012.

Also in her 27 minutes of playing time Saturday, Boggs totaled nine rebounds, one assist, two blocks and three steals while committing only one foul.

The Shore ladies won for the third time in four games to improve to 9-10 on the season and 4-5 in the Centennial Conference.

Washington avenged a 73-68 overtime loss at Bryn Mawr just two and a half weeks earlier, though that loss is still a bit of a head scratcher as Washington was 56-1 in the series up to that point.

Whatever.

Also on Saturday for the Shore ladies, Abby Meredith and Ellie Carter-Soriano scored 18 and 10 points, respectively, Sarah Oleary contributed nine points and seven rebounds, and Emma Robinson led all players with 14 rebounds.

Meredith buried a jumper on the first shot of the game to start a run of 14 unanswered points.

Kept off the scoreboard for the entire first frame, Bryn Mawr (5-14, 1-8 CC) ended the shutout with 9 minutes, 34 seconds remaining in the half on a Hannah Mack field goal. [Mack finished with a team high of eight points.]

Meredith on an assist from Boggs buried a 3-pointer on Washington’s next trip down the court, starting an 11-0 run that extended the spread to 25-2 with six and a half minutes to play before intermission.

The halftime score was 40-5.

Washington led 54-15 heading into the fourth quarter, and Boggs needing eight points to get to 1,000.

She reached the milestone on a layup with 5 minutes, 21 seconds remaining, boosting Washington’s lead to 64-24.

Then, coach Alisha Mosley called a time-out so that Boggs could be applauded as she came out of the game.

What’s next: Washington travels to McDaniel on Wednesday, Feb. 4. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. McDaniel is 16-3 overall, 5-3 in the Centennial Conference after Saturday’s 54-44 victory at Franklin & Marshall.
