WORTON — Kent County High School baseball players were on their collective feet March 31 in an innings-long rally that ultimately fell one run short.
Trailing 5-0 after a half-inning, KCHS leveled the score at 7-all in the fifth but was not able to come all the way back against Cambridge-South Dorchester.
The visiting Vikings pushed two runs across in the top of the sixth and held on for a 9-8 win.
In the seventh inning with two away and Nate Sutton representing the tying run on third, Cambridge intentionally walked freshman catcher Jake Stumpf, who had gone 4-for-4 with three runs scored.
The batter behind Stumpf grounded out to short-circuit the rally.
“It’s a game we should’ve won,” first-year head coach Mike Iacona told The Evening Enterprise in a text message. “Got behind too many runs and just couldn’t pull it out in the end. One hit here or there would’ve made the difference.”
“I like the fact that they didn’t give up and almost pulled it out,” Iacona added.
While it’s spring break for Kent County Public Schools this week, the Trojans [1-5] travel to Snow Hill and then Cambridge for a rematch.
KCHS’ next home game is Monday, April 13 at 4 p.m. against border rival Queen Anne’s.
