Chestertown police arrest suspect in Cross Street vandalism

CHESTERTOWN — Police here on Jan. 8 served a summons charging a Chestertown man with multiple counts of malicious destruction of property stemming from a New Year’s Day window- and door-shattering spree on South Cross Street.

Brandon Jamar Jameis Phillips, 32, is accused of damaging the front window at Empty Hangers consignment shop, the glass door and alarm system at Boyer’s Jewelers and the front window at Coldwell Banker Chesapeake Real Estate Company, all in the 100-block of S. Cross Street. He also allegedly destroyed two flag poles at Sultana Education Foundation located at 200 S. Cross St., according to the charging document.

Phillips has a preliminary inquiry scheduled for Feb. 7 in the District Court for Kent County. At that time a judge will determine if there is enough evidence for the case to move forward.

Chestertown Police Chief Ronald Dixon told The Evening Enterprise that Phillips was identified through camera footage, and that Phillips acted alone.

According to the application for statement of charges, camera footage shows Phillips kicking in the front door of Boyer’s Jewelers and throwing a metal table at the window of Coldwell Banker.

Also, police observed a table in the gallery portion of Empty Hangers along with scattered glass and two chairs — one upright and the other knocked over — in front of the glass panel that had been smashed.

At Coldwell Banker, police found a table and chair knocked over in front of the shattered glass panel.

According to the charging document, there was evidence that someone attempted to break a glass at the Sultana Education Foundation by kicking it.

All the crimes appear to have occurred before 1 a.m. on Jan. 1.

Invoices provided to police estimate damages of $2,800 to the Coldwell Banker window and $1,500 to the Boyer’s Jewelers glass front door.

Also, according to the charging document, the estimated cost to replace the Boyer’s Jewelers alarm system is $559 and the flag poles at the Sultana Education Foundation is $200.

PFC Travis Burke was the lead investigator, with assistance from Cpl. Brandon McGinnis of the CPD and deputies of the Kent County Sheriff’s Office.
