DOVER, Del. — A Chestertown woman has been charged following investigation of a pedestrian-involved fatality last month in Delaware.
According to a news release from the Dover Police Department, Aaliyah Graves, 24, turned herself into police on Sept. 1. She was processed and arraigned at the Dover Police Department.
Graves initially was committed to Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution in New Castle, Delaware on $14,650 cash bail on the following charges: leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death; theft of a motor vehicle; tampering with physical evidence; operation of a vehicle causing the death of another person; driving without a valid license; and driving at an unreasonable or imprudent speed.
Graves is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Charges were filed following investigation of a fatal crash on North DuPont Highway early Sunday morning, Aug. 31.
The investigation began at 2:48 a.m. when the Dover Police Department received a call that a vehicle had struck a pedestrian in the 200-block of North DuPont Highway.
The pedestrian, identified as 62-year-old Barbara Benson of Bridgeville, Delaware, died at the scene as a result of her injuries, according to the news release.
The vehicle and driver that struck Benson were not on the scene when police arrived.
The ensuing investigation revealed that a black 2001 Toyota Avalon was traveling southbound on North DuPont Highway in the right lane and allegedly struck Benson.
The vehicle did not stop, according to the news release.
This occurred at about 2:20 a.m., 28 minutes before police were notified of the incident.
Through “investigative measures,” police were able to identify the driver as Graves and were able to locate the vehicle in Worton, according to the news release.
