Dems to host discussion about expanding board of county commissioners, moving toward district representation

CHESTERTOWN — The composition of the Board of Kent County Commissioners will be the topic of what is being described as a “community conversation” hosted by the Democratic Club of Kent County on Thursday, Feb. 19 at Procolino’s Pizza. The public is invited.

Currently there are three county commissioners, all elected at-large.

The Feb. 19 program will explore a proposal to increase the number of commissioners to five and to elect them by district rather than at-large.

Barb Flook, past president of the League of Women Voters of Kent County, will discuss findings from a recent LWV study examining whether expanding the board and shifting to district representation could strengthen accountability, improve constituent service and broaden community representation. She will outline why the League of Women Voters undertook the study, what it learned and what steps may follow.

The LWV remains strictly nonpartisan and does not endorse candidates or political parties.

Joining Flook will be Dean Snyder, a journalist and retired United Methodist pastor, who reported on the study for the Kent County News.

Snyder will discuss what he uncovered during his reporting, additional information he has gathered since publication and his plans for further coverage of the issue.

Snyder’s writing has appeared in The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Huffington Post (now branded as HuffPost) and numerous Methodist publications. After retiring from Foundry United Methodist Church in Washington, D.C., he and his wife operated Coops and Crops farm in Kennedyville before he returned to writing and reporting.

A question-and-answer session will follow the presentations.

Procolino’s Pizza is located at 711 Washington Ave. in the Kent Plaza shopping center, Chestertown.

“We’ll start socializing at 5:30 p.m.,” followed by a brief business meeting of the Democratic Club of Kent County beginning at 6:45 p.m., according to a spokesperson for the club.

The program will start at 7 p.m.

It’s not necessary to order food to attend the meeting.

  1. Hello, I think this would be great to have representation for all citizens of Kent County and not just the corporate municipalities. I have always wondered where the tax dollars are going that are paid by the villages/small towns of Kent County.
