CHESTERTOWN — Volunteer firefighters from Kent, Queen Anne’s and Cecil counties responded to a large field fire mid-afternoon Tuesday, Sept. 10 in the 9200-block of Stockton Startt Road, between Flatland Road and Earl Nicholson Road.
The dispatch came in at about 3:30 p.m.
Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company Deputy Chief Brad Russum was the first on the scene and found the fire “well advanced,” according to a post on the fire company’s Facebook page.
Upon firefighters’ arrival, there were about 10 acres burning. As the fire was wind driven, it was growing fast and would ultimately involve 22 acres, according to the Facebook post.
Mutual aid was required for additional brush trucks, tankers and manpower.
Of note: the field of corn had been harvested so there was only stubble.
In addition to volunteer fire companies — Chestertown, Kennedyville, Rock Hall, Betterton, Millington, Galena, Church Hill, Crumpton, Sudlersville (brush truck to the scene, engine transfer to Station 6 in Chestertown) and Cecilton — Kent-Queen Anne’s Rescue Squad, Kent County EMS and Kent County Fire Police responded.
