OAK HALL, Va. — The Trojans head to North East High School (0-2) on Friday night hoping to dent the win column.
They are coming off a 48-12 loss last week at Arcadia, playing a futile game of catch-up after the Firebirds (1-1) ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown and then tacked on the two-point conversion.
With junior Dwan Harris taking his first snaps of the season, Kent County also scored on its first possession. Harris connected with Ramon “RJ” Peterson on second-and-goal on the 22-yard line.
KCHS (0-2) was denied on its try for two extra points, and trailed 8-6.
The spread was 16-6 at the end of the first quarter and 32-12 at halftime.
The Trojans’ second touchdown also came in the air, with Harris hooking up with Dylan Hurtt.
Neither team scored in the third quarter.
Arcadia salted away the win with a 16-point final frame.
Junior Carson Wallace led the Firebirds, completing three of nine passes for 42 yards and rushing for 124 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries.
Paul Tue, who has moved up as the Trojans’ head coach after a year as an assistant, acknowledged that “we expected a better result” against the Firebirds.
He gave the Firebirds props for being well coached.
There also were bright spots for the Trojans.
Harris, who sat out the season opener the week before at Bohemia Manor, played well at quarterback and defensive end, according to Tue.
Also earning high marks was freshman running back/defensive end Thomas Moore, who “is proving to be extremely tough both physically and mentally,” Tue said.
The 12 points the Trojans put on the board is an improvement from Week One, when they were shut out at Bo Manor, 38-0.
The host Eagles scored on the first play from scrimmage, Khalil Jones carrying the ball 89 yards into the end zone.
Bo Manor (1-1) scored on every possession of the first half for a 38-0 lead.
For the game, Kent County never reached the red zone and was held to a handful of first downs.
