WORTON — More than 300 young runners turned out for the 35th edition of the Sneaker Creeper on Friday, May 23, unofficially kicking off Tea Party Festival weekend.
It was windy and a cool 68 degrees at the 5:30 p.m. start.
For the second year in a row, the footraces “just for kids” ages 2 to 11 were held on the track at Kent County High School’s Trojan Stadium while the track at Washington College is being resurfaced.
In the earliest years, the races were held on the dirt horse track at Stepne Manor, Chestertown.
The Sneaker Creeper benefits H.H. Garnet Elementary School in Chestertown. Funds are used to support school events, assemblies and extracurricular activities through the PTA.
Races are broken down by age group and distances, ranging from 25 yards for the youngest racers up to a mile for the oldest participants.
Kinsley Cunningham, 11, was the first to finish the mile, stopping the timer in 5 minutes, 58 seconds.
