CHESTERTOWN — As 2026 is the 250th anniversary year of the United States’ founding — also known as the semiquincentennial — the Historical Society of Kent County is launching “20 Over 12,” a year-long public history initiative highlighting Kent County’s storied past.
Throughout the year, “20 Over 12” will feature the release of a new brochure monthly, each containing 20 carefully researched facts about Kent County. According to a news release, the facts will span centuries and topics, offering readers a mix of familiar stories and lesser-known moments that reflect the people, places and events that have shaped the county.
Brochures will be distributed monthly at the Historical Society of Kent County’s Bordley History Center at 301 High St. in downtown Chestertown, partner sites throughout Kent County and area lodgings — as well as select community events. Partner sites include public libraries; Galena, Millington and Rock Hall town halls; the Kent County Community Center in Worton; and the Port of Chestertown Marina.
In addition, a poster featuring the monthly facts will be displayed in the Bordley History Center’s front window, ensuring the project remains accessible to the public even while the museum is closed for the winter.
During the milestone semiquincentennial year, “20 Over 12” offers an opportunity to reflect on Kent County’s part in the broader American story, according to historical society Executive Director Maria Wood.
By sharing a large number of historical facts in a variety of formats and locations, the aim is to spark curiosity and encourage residents and visitors to learn more about aspects of Kent County that are new to them, Wood said.
“The ’20 Over 12′ initiative is part of the HSKC’s ongoing commitment to education, preservation, and community engagement as the nation commemorates 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence,” the news release states.
