SUDLERSVILLE — The only marksman at the War on the Shore more accurate than Kent County High School sophomore Joey Homyack was Queen Anne’s County senior Nicholas “Cole” Coppage, the reigning national high school champion.
The clay target competition here on Nov. 8 was a showcase between the border rivals.
Homyack and Coppage each hit 49 out of a possible 50 targets in trap, with the tie broken in a shoot-off.
Coppage was perfect, hitting all 25 extra targets, while Homyack hit 21.
“Just a lot of pressure. … Shooting with only a squad of two [a full squad typically consists of up to five shooters], I couldn’t get in a rhythm,” Homyack said.
“It would have been cool to get to a second round [of 25],” he said. “But it was still cool being up there.”
Sudlersville Skeet Club hosted the War on the Shore, which drew a total of 74 competitors from Kent, Queen Anne’s, Kent Island and Easton high schools and local 4-H’ers.
Kent County High School’s coed clay target program was launched in August, and currently competes as a club. This was the culminating activity for the Trojans’ inaugural fall season. Brad Moore is the head coach.
At the War on the Shore, Homyack (42-49-91) was the runner-up to Coppage (46-49-95) in overall scoring, the total of skeet and trap.
Rounding out the top five individuals were 4-H’er CJ Martin (43-47-90), Easton’s Austin Eader (44-46-90) and Kent County freshman Gavin Jackson (42-47-89).
