CHESTERTOWN — The public is encouraged to attend a meeting on homelessness in Kent County, and ways to address the issues involved, at the Presbyterian Church of Chestertown, 905 Gateway Drive, on Thursday, Feb. 20.
The event is sponsored by the Democratic Club of Kent County.
Many of the local organizations currently working to assist the unhoused population have been invited to participate in the meeting.
The Samaritan Group (https://www.samaritangroupofkentcounty.org/) operates the county’s emergency winter shelter out of donated space in churches.
Additional daytime support comes from the Kent County Public Library, which opens its doors to the homeless population during hours of operation.
The Chester Valley Ministers’ Association operates the Good Neighbor Fund (https://chestervalleyministers.org/good-neighbor-fund) in part to prevent homelessness.
Prevention also is part of the mission of Rebuilding Together Eastern Shore (https://rebuildingtogethereasternshore.org/) and of Kent Attainable Housing (https://kentattainablehousing.org/).
Two newer groups have been active in seeking a broader range of solutions as well — The Shelter Alliance (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61565758801498) and Family Promise Upper Shore (https://www.familypromiseuppershore.org/).
Representatives from all these groups have been invited to share their work and outline ways that the community can support their efforts.
On Feb. 20, door will open at 6:30 p.m. A brief business meeting will be conducted by the Democratic Club of Kent County at 6:45 p.m. The main program will start around 7 p.m., and conclude no later than 8:30 p.m.
“Please consider attending this important event to learn more about the challenges faced by our unhoused citizens, and about the different ways that local groups are working to help,” a news release states.
