Investigators say smoke alarm alerts occupants to house fire

MASSEY — Investigators are pointing to an “unspecified electrical event” involving the power surge protector as the cause of a house fire here Wednesday morning, Dec. 18, according to the preliminary report of the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were dispatched at 6:26 a.m. for a structure fire in the 34000-block of Maryland Line Road, Massey.

The owners, identified as Jeffrey and Whitney Turner, were alerted to the fire when the smoke alarm activated, according to a news release.

The fire originated in a first-floor bathroom.

A total of 40 firefighters responded. The Community Fire Company of Millington was the primary responder.

According to the fire marshal’s office, there were two alarms due to staffing.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in 45 minutes.

Estimated loss to the two-story home and contents is $70,000, according to the news release.
