KCHS swimmers sweep on Senior Day

CHESTERTOWN — Kent County swept Cambridge-South Dorchester in a high school swim meet at the Kent County Family YMCA’s Dixon Aquatic Center on Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 22.

It was a fitting send-off for three-time team MVPs Izzy Anderson and Henry Martinez as it was Senior Day and the Trojans’ final home meet of the season.

Also celebrated on Senior Day were Nick Stead and international students Misha Rau (Taiwan) and Me’An Tanjapatkul (Thailand), who are all first-year swimmers at KCHS.

Grayson Wise, the head coach at alma mater Kent County, acknowledged that it was an emotional meet — for many reasons.

“This is the largest team we’ve had in my four years, everyone has been working very hard and the times have really improved,” she said. “Now, we’re ready to ‘lock in’ for Baysides, regionals and states.”

Wise, Anderson and Martinez started their KCHS journey together in 2021-2022, adding to the poignancy of the meet.

“I’ve seen them through all four years and they have really grown,” Wise said of Anderson and Martinez.

To underscore that point, for example, Wise noted that Martinez as a freshman was an alternate at the state championships in the 50 freestyle and now he’s seeded in the top five.

In their meet this week, Kent County’s girls and boys won their respective opening race and never trailed — even though they did not fill all events.

KCHS’ girls won all nine events they entered en route to a comfortable 75-46 victory.

On the boys side, the Trojans escaped with a 67-65 victory even though they did not enter the final event, the 400 free relay.

Kent County’s 14-point lead after a 1-3 finish in the 200 free relay was too much for Cambridge to overcome with only three events remaining.

The Vikings made it interesting, however, by going 1-2 in the 100 backstroke while also winning the 100 breaststroke and 400 free relay to finish.

Printed here are the complete results for the Trojans.
