KCHS to get 2nd chance against Cambridge

WORTON — The Trojans will be able to see how much they have improved when Cambridge’s girls come here Wednesday afternoon for game two of the home-and-away series in high school soccer.

This will be a rematch of the season opener on Sept. 6 that Cambridge at home won easily, 8-0.

While acknowledging that Cambridge is a talented team, especially on the offensive end, Kent County coach Ben Joiner told The Evening Enterprise, “We are a different team now than the one they saw in that first game. We have added some key players to the team and we have been working really hard in practice.”

He said the experience gained over the last six matches “should go a long way in changing the outcome from the previous game.”

The key, Joiner said, will be getting the Trojans to recognize the progress they’ve made, believe in themselves and the team’s ability to rise to meet the challenge, and play with confidence.

Joiner said he and assistant Joel Tolbert know the Trojans “have what it takes to play well. We’re focused on the process and believe the results will reflect that.”

Wednesday’s match begins at 4 p.m.

The Trojans are 2-4, having already surpassed their win total of a year ago.

Kent County picked up its second win Sept. 16 at home against Crisfield, 4-0.

Junior midfielder Delilah Markovic had a hat trick for the locals; Morgan Kendall scored the other goal.

The Trojans led 2-0 at halftime.

Markovic tacked on the third goal in the 67th minute, collecting a through pass from Paige Miller and then essentially walking in the ball.

Markovic completed her hat trick in the 70th minute.

Sophie Cousineau, the Trojans’ sophomore keeper, was required to make only one save — in the 69th minute — to preserve the clean sheet.

Cousineau became a field player for the final 10 minutes and change, swapping positions with midfielder Jane Cleary.

Coach Joiner said the Crisfield match was the best of the season for the Trojans.

“Their teamwork and support of one another is growing with each game and they were able to take what we’ve been working so hard on in practice and apply it during the game,” Joiner said.

“Crisfield was well prepared and had some strong athletes, so it was a real confidence boost to play well and get a win against a solid team,” Joiner told The Evening Enterprise. “We were able to execute the offense the way we know we can and we continued to play well defensively. It was a terrific all-around effort.”
