Kent boots Pocomoke, 2-0, for 5th win in a row

POCOMOKE — The Trojans ran their win streak to five on Tuesday, 2-0 at Pocomoke, to improve to 5-3.

They already have eclipsed their win total of a year ago.

Sophomore Sebastien Cousineau netted both Kent County goals. What held up as the eventual game-winner came in the 27th minute and the insurance goal was scored in the 57th minute. Freshman Dylan Peralta had the assist on the second goal.

Leyder Cruz was not required to make a save in posting his second shutout of the season.

Pocomoke has a rich soccer history that includes six state championships, four runner-up finishes and a total of 13 Final Four appearances, so it’s understandable that Kent County first-year head coach Dennis Hickman would refer to Tuesday’s match as “a tough win in that environment.”

The Trojans avenged last year’s 3-0 loss at home.

This time around they dominated ball possession and shots on goal, according to Hickman, but only put two in the net.

Hickman attributed the current win streak, in part, to Class 1A Kent County playing similarly small schools.

“That makes a difference,” he said matter-of-factly.

Also, he said, “the boys have been finding their passing lanes, knowing where each other are on the field and being able to make adjustments during the game or at halftime based on the team we are playing.”

Over the last five matches, the Trojans have outscored their collective opponents, 19-3.  In that span they have shared the wealth with nine different players contributing either a goal or an assist.

Kent County is on the road again Thursday at Class 2A Kent Island, before returning home Oct. 8 for a key 1A East Region I match with Colonel Richardson (6-2).

The Oct. 8 clash with Colonel Richardson is a twin bill, with the jayvee match beginning at 4 p.m. and the varsity match to follow at 5:30 p.m.
