Kent County’s Hawkins 2nd in Bayside shot put; aims for three-peat as state qualifier

SNOW HILL — Kent County High School senior shot putter Ke’yare Hawkins headed to the Class 1A East Region indoor track meet today looking to qualify for the state championships for the third year in a row.

She’s doing so after most recently placing second in the Bayside Conference championships Jan. 21 at the Worcester County Recreation Center.

Hawkins was the runner-up with a throw of 34 feet, 10 inches.

She trailed only Queen Anne’s senior Makena Fellows, whose throw of 35-3.5 was the best of all 21 entrants.

Fellows has been the top thrower in the conference throughout the short indoor season.

Queen Anne’s is a Class 2A school, which means that Hawkins and Fellows will not compete against each other at the region and state meets.

Due to injuries and other challenges, KCHS did not take its full team to last month’s Bayside Conference championships — which is for all public high schools of all enrollment classifications on the Eastern Shore.

Hawkins had the best finish for the Trojans, and was their only medalist.

Senior Pacome Mennetrier, an international student who is studying at KCHS for the 2025-26 academic year, had two top-10 finishes — sixth in the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 14.73 seconds and eighth at twice that distance in 5:07.18. Both times are personal bests.

Printed here are complete results for KCHS. Top 10 place-finishes are noted.

Kent County was expected to send its full team to today’s state-qualifying region meet at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex in Landover.

There are 18 schools in the Class 1A East Region that have indoor track programs; five of them are from Prince George’s County, two are from Cecil County, one is from Anne Arundel County, another is from Calvert County and the remaining nine are from the Eastern Shore.

The first- and second-place finishers in each event in the 1A East Region automatically move on, as well as the next top six times or marks overall from the three regions.

In addition to the automatic qualifiers, individuals and relays who in their region finals meet the qualifying standards also advance to the state championships.
